Welcome to Room 8!
This vibrant classroom is thoughtfully designed to support the growth and development of our energetic and creative five-year-olds. With 10 wonderful children in our class, each day is filled with meaningful learning across a range of subjects, including literacy, maths, social science, Te Reo Māori, and more. One of the photos below shows an area of our classroom where children engage in activities that foster their intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development. Our room is a nurturing environment where curiosity, critical thinking, and personal growth are at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that each child feels loved, valued, and supported.
In addition to these areas of development, we also focus on nurturing the spiritual growth of each child, helping them learn to be Christ-like in their actions and relationships with others. For more information about how our class operates, please read the description below.
What happens in Room 8?
Music & Movement
The day starts with prayer, worship through music, and movement, helping children begin the day focused on God. They reflect on the weekly Bible verse and embrace the character trait of the week, setting a positive, Godly foundation for the day ahead.
Te Reo Māori
Children explore the Māori language, culture, and history, learning about traditions and the people of Aotearoa (New Zealand). They are introduced to simple words, phrases, and songs to build their connection to the rich heritage of Māori culture.
Library Time
Library time fosters a love for reading as children explore a variety of age-appropriate books across different genres. This experience encourages imagination, vocabulary growth, and a sense of enjoyment in learning through stories and pictures.
Physical Education
Through physical activities, children develop endurance, coordination, and motor skills. The focus is on fun and active play while promoting teamwork, healthy habits, and an appreciation for physical activity.
Literacy (BSLA Programme)
The BSLA (Better Start Literacy Approach) programme is designed to build a solid foundation in reading, writing, and other literacy skills. New entrants focus on phonics, letter recognition, word building, and simple sentences, developing their language skills in a fun and interactive way.
Maths
Children learn foundational maths concepts using Prime Maths books, including numbers, counting, shapes, simple addition and subtraction, and patterns. The activities support early problem-solving skills and numeracy development in a hands-on, engaging way.
Science & Arts
Children explore their world through science and creativity. They investigate people, society, and environments, drawing inspiration from Te Ao Tangata (the world of people). Activities include art, music, and simple science experiments to stimulate curiosity and creativity.
Outdoor and Indoor Play
Free playtime both indoors and outdoors allows children to explore their environment, build social skills, and engage in imaginative play. This unstructured time encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and emotional development while fostering independence and creativity.
