Welcome to our classroom. We have a lively bunch of Year 5 and 6 students in Room 2. Our class loves to sing and move, and we make sure that we learn new songs regularly and listen to music when we we can, such as during visual art. We enjoy working on our mathematics and literacy, and we especially love to share our writing with others.
📖 Homework goes home on a Monday, we mark it on the following Monday although students are encouraged to hand it in on the Friday as it can be easy to forget after a weekend. Monday is also our day for Library.
📝 Literacy: Reading and writing are a significant part of our literacy programme and we often link this in with the topics which we are learning abut for science and technology. Spelling and grammar programmes are also an essential component in our literacy learning.
🗣️ Speaking: In Room 2 a key element of our literacy program is learning to speak effectively. We practice this by sharing our work with others, reading aloud in groups or to the class, performing speeches, sharing ideas, asking questions and solving problems together. This is important because oral language is needed to negotiate social situations, create meaning of the world around us, and it also helps students access the curriculum.
✞ Bible / Christian Character: The Foundation Worldview curriculum is a great resource which we use in the classroom to help students build a strong biblical foundation. Character traits are a focus each week, we use many of the lessons from kidsofintegrity.com to teach students how and why positive character traits are beneficial to their lives both now and in the future.
🔢Mathematics: We use the Prime Mathematics programme which is about deep learning and mastery of concepts, or in other words, understanding. It was designed by Scholastic International and is a structured programme grounded in the science of learning.
🔍 Inquiry: Each term we have a different inquiry focus, for example looking at how "God is wise & at work" through various lenses.
🛠️ Technology: Each term we have a new focus on an area of the technology curriculum, for example one of the following: Technological Practice: Study practice of others and undertake their own (concepts, plans, models)
Technological Knowledge: Understanding how and why things work. (Evaluate design ideas, develop prototype, understanding of material properties)
Nature of Technology: (Critique the impact of technology on societies and environments. Look at current and historical issues)
💡 Science: Each term we have a new focus on an area of the science curriculum, for example one of the following: Planet Earth and Beyond: 1. Earth’s systems – land, water, air, life and their interdependence. 2. Solar system.
Physical World: Physical phenomena - Includes Forces, Electricity, Magnetism, Light, Sound, Waves, Heat.
Material World: Study of matter and the changes it undergoes.
Living World: Living things and how they interact with each other and the environment.
